The Artists-in-Residence Programme (AIR) invites overseas artists engaging with schools and different communities to enrich the arts experiences of people with different abilities by holding a series of workshops. The overseas artists will collaborate with local artists and participants to create a new work before showcasing it in March. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all workshops and Showcase of the AIR will be held online.
Hijinx is a professional theatre company working to pioneer, produce and promote opportunities for actors with learning disabilities and/or autism to create outstanding productions. The heart of their work is always their learning disabled and/or autistic artists, who constantly challenge perceptions of what theatre can be and how it should be made. Hijinx’s work is bold, vibrant, anarchic and honest because their artists are bold, vibrant, anarchic and honest. Breaking through the limits of lockdown, Hijinx created a reinterpretation of Kafka’s “Metamorphosis” in 2020 via a Zoom webinar, and already performed for online festivals in the UK and Germany to critical acclaim, reaching over 1000 audience members over the two shows. https://www.hijinx.org.uk/
Online Workshops & Showcase（Jan to Mar 2021）
The AIR 2021 is an innovative and ambitious collaboration between Hijinx from Wales and “No Limits” that takes place entirely on Zoom and provides a genuinely exciting and rewarding experience for local participants of different abilities. Hijinx’s Artistic Director Ben Pettitt-Wade will lead the programme alongside Michelle Li, a multi-talented Hong Kong based playwright/director. Throughout the residency, the Hijinx artistic team will guide the group through the devising process in the creation of the final online Showcase.
Through the workshops, participants will gain a better understanding of Hijinx’s devising process and the basics of improvisation. They will be able to express themselves and share their creativity in the online Showcase on 6 March 2021.
All participants are welcome, regardless of their abilities. Prior experience in theatre is not mandatory. Some experience in online video meeting is preferred.
