imperfect by Regan Linton & Brian Malone
Hold the judgements on who we are
Absorbing and exhilarating artistry that changes the narrative on disability
Come on, babe/Why don’t we paint the town/And all that jazz…Musical aficionados are sure to recognise these lyrics from the long-running Broadway hit Chicago. In this critically acclaimed behind-the-scenes documentary, Phamaly Theatre Company celebrates the group’s 30th anniversary in style, its rip-roaring revival of the show and lineup of 20-plus actors with disabilities providing a tour-de-force new take on 1920s murderesses and razzmatazz.
Phamaly, a US professional performing arts company which takes its name from “family” and welcomes performers with diverse physical, cognitive, intellectual and emotional abilities, is all about changing people’s perceptions. In imperfect, wheelchair-user director Regan Linton sets out to kick out stereotypes and showcase the creative originality of her cast–succeeding superbly. She also teams up with renowned documentary director Brian Malone to follow every actor as they attend auditions, perform in the production’s premiere, and participate in post-performance reflection.
Artists first, with disability simply a part of what they do, this multi-awardwinning film is riveting and revealing both on and off the stage. Enjoy!
