ODDLANDS by Back to Back Theatre & Back to Back Pictures
A meltdown in the making here and now
Succinct, compelling storytelling empowered by cataclysmic setting and prophetic dialogue
Think Chernobyl. Think Fukushima. Is the post-apocalyptic world of ODDLANDS so removed from our own?
In this 30-minute short film, survivors are employed to clean up the mess after a catastrophe. Left with no choice but to take up the lousy job to make a living, Tam and Des pass the AI-controlled assessment and are sent to a toxic wasteland. Once there, the sentimental Tam becomes immersed in the family pictures she finds, while practical Des destroys any creatures left alive to stem contamination and earn the promotion and benefits this brings. Then, one day, they come across a human, possibly the last remaining person at the site. Suddenly, decisions don’t look the same. What should the pair do?
ODDLANDS marks Back to Back Theatre’s debut screen production. First released in 2017, the remarkable short film went on to win awards at leading festivals in Australia, England and Canada. It premiered on ABC TV in Australia in 2019. Filmmaking is now one of the company’s key creative endeavours.
