“…this highly emotional and utterly superb performance left me delighted, but drained, and with a tear in my eye. It was marvellous.＂
– Broadway World
Australian company Restless Dance Theatre is famous for creating and presenting unexpectedly real dance theatre nationally and internationally, that is collaboratively devised, inclusive and informed by disability.
The 15-minute show features six dancers performing in an art gallery alongside paintings by the famous French expressionist Georges Rouault. They glide like shadows across the screen, lit in vibrant colours. There is an unusual beauty to the work of Georges Rouault. The imperfect form of the body and the troubled soul of the work, resonates with how people with different abilities can feel and be perceived. Some may be confronted while others may see beauty and difference.
Directed by the renowned artist Michelle Ryan, Seeing Through Darkness brings together artists of different abilities, something Restless Dance Theatre has become renowned for. It is a thrilling, immersive experience, with haunting music by Hilary Kleinig and Emily Tulloch, that draws the viewer in.
This wonderful spectacle showcases brilliant dancing and gives performers with different abilities the chance to express themselves fully. The show is a must for fans of modern dance and anyone with an interest in human movement.
