A striking work that re-examines social conventions surrounding the dancing body with tremendous and beautiful physical diversity

Performed by the leading contemporary dance company Vertigo Dance Company and choreographed by renowned choreographer Sharon Fridman, Shape on Us is a striking work that re-examines social conventions and truisms surrounding the dancing body.

As eight dancers with multiple physical abilities break away from the aids that serve some of them in everyday life, a collective organism takes shape in the encounter between unique bodies. Exploring their individual fragilities and needs, the dancers confront the push and pull of rejection and concern, meeting in moments of tension, support, loneliness and love. Gradually, as the piece unfolds, disparate expressions merge to create an astoundingly tender collective language of touch and cooperation.

Shape on Us challenges taboos around looking at the different body. Powerfully embracing the delicate physical systems that transform involuntary movements into deliberate gestures, it questions our perception of what is considered natural and abnormal.

First presented in 2020, Shape on Us is the product of Vertigo Dance Company’s ongoing engagement with the disability community.

A breathtaking lesson in listening, sharing and connection.

Shape On Us reflects the first-person experience of disability, as well as the social response to disability. In its exploration of the human body, individual and collective, there is a sense of endless possibility and transcendent beauty.

Vertigo Dance Company

Vertigo is a contemporary dance company offering a physical meeting place for artists and audiences that takes the viewer on new or unexpected, exciting and challenging journeys into unfamiliar territories. Vertigo represents international standards of artistic excellence, with a social and community touch. The company’s movement vocabulary and creative expression celebrates the intersection of art and human nature.

Vertigo is a messenger of Israeli art at its best, at home and abroad, that brings people closer together and touches them through the language of the body. As such, in addition to its performances, the company collaborates on master classes, workshops and co-productions with other companies from around the world and invites artists from different fields to create together with the company.

Vertigo Power of Balance

Vertigo Power of Balance creates a meeting place for people with various physical abilities, disabled and non-disabled, through movement, contact and improvisation.

Established in 2000, and directed by Hai Cohen and Tali Wertheim, the Power of Balance Center operates from the Vertigo Eco-Art Village – the home of the acclaimed Vertigo Dance Company – offering comprehensive integrated dance activities that include annual programmes, classes, workshops and performances in Israel and abroad.

The unique approach of integrated contact improvisation allows for a direct physical encounter through spontaneous dance. While exploring contact, direction, gravitation and momentum, participants are given the opportunity to experience an especially attentive communication through the senses, emphasising their common ability to fully express themselves through dance.
